Just in time for the Super Bowl, I thought I would share with you one of my most requested party recipes – homemade guacamole. If you’ve been searching for the perfect guacamole recipe, or if you are looking for an appetizer that will impress everyone, stop right here. You’ve come to the right place. This is without a doubt THE BEST guacamole I’ve ever had.
Before I came up with this recipe, I had always made guacamole using a few avocados, a lime, and a seasoning packet, and for the most part I was satisfied with that method and had no intention of changing it. It was simple, tasty, and pretty fool-proof for the most part. In a way it was by accident that I discovered this new and improved method. One day I had a serious craving for some chips and guac, but no seasoning packet. I had made it enough times that I thought I could probably figure out what seasonings to use, but I didn’t expect it to turn out half as good as it did. I mashed up some avocados, threw in some fresh lime juice, cumin, salt and pepper, garlic powder, and cilantro, until I had just the right amount of each. To my surprise, it turned out far better than using the pre-made mix. When my mom told me that it was the best I had made, I knew I needed to ditch the seasoning packets.
Since then, I always use my own seasoning blend. In fact I find it kind of funny how I used to rely on the seasoning packets so much when it’s actually incredibly easy to make on your own and a thousand times yummier.
There are a few components to guacamole that are essential in my opinion. First, you want to use fresh ingredients. This really makes all the difference in the world. Use fresh cilantro and fresh lime juice. I’ve used dried cilantro before and the flavor just wasn’t there. Also a freshly squeezed lime has a much better flavor than the bottled stuff. Fresh is key here. Your avocados should also be at the right stage of ripeness. They should have a little give to them when you push on them, but not so soft that they turn to mush. If they aren’t ripe enough, they won’t taste right and you’ll have a heck of a time mashing them up.
The other thing about fresh guacamole is that it does turn brown easily. There are many different methods that people suggest to prevent this from happening, but I have found that the best way is simply to use plenty of lime juice. The amount I use in this recipe is perfect. It usually keeps in the fridge for about two days before turning brown, so you can make this in the morning and take it to a party in the evening, and it will still be nice and green.
I make this recipe pretty much once a week for myself and also bring it to almost every family gathering I attend. Every time I make it, people ask me what’s in it. People literally flock to it. I’ve had countless people tell me that it’s the best guacamole they’ve ever had.
Make this recipe for your next party and I guarantee it will be devoured. But just know that once you share this with others, you will probably be expected to bring it to every party you attend from that point on. If you’re not ready for that kind of commitment, then stick with the seasoning packets. But if you’re ready to take your guac to the next level, then make this now. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you! 🙂
